Horror remakes which got it just right

Hollywood may have churned out some chilling horror movies over the years, but what you may not know is that some of your favorites started in another language.

Some of the best-loved horror movies of the last few decades have been remakes of foreign language originals; here are few that got it right.

Let Me In

The novel Let the Right One by John Ajvide Lindqvist had already been adapted into a Swedish movie of the same name in 2008. It was directed by Thomas Alfredson and received substantial critical acclaim.

The story deals with adolescent vampires and earned praise for its originality and powerful storytelling. In 2010, an English language remake, Let Me In, was released. It starred Chole Grace Moretz and although many loyal fans preferred the original Swedish version, Let Me In also received positive reviews.

The Ring

The 2002 creepy flick about the cursed videotape and the mysterious long-haired girl climbing out of the well certainly gave audiences the chills. Starring Naomi Watts and Brian Cox, The Ring proved a hit with horror fans and spawned several sequels.

However, The movie itself was a remake of a classic Japanese Ringu, released in 1998. The consensus that the director Gore Verbinski had done an excellent job helming the English language remake, but horror fans still acclaim the original Japanese masterpiece.

The Grudge

Another remake of a Japanese classic. The 2000 movie Ju-On was so well received that the original director Takashi Shimizu was hired by the studio to make the 2004 English language remake. The result was a hit, due in no small part to Shimizu and the casting of the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Four frightening facts about The Turn of the Screw

Henry James’s 19th century novella The Turn of the Screw is considered a classic of horror literature. It was most recently the inspiration for the 2020 movie the The Turning, produced by Steven Spielberg. Here are some interesting facts about The Turn of the Screw you may not know.

1. The book by Henry James was published in 1898 and based in the late 19th century. The film adaptation, though, has been brought up to date, but not to right up to modern day. Director Floria Sigismondi said she wanted to set The Turning in the 1990s. This way she could give it a modern twist, but didn’t want to complicated matters by basing it in the 21st century where characters would be able to use mobile phones and the internet.

2. One of the movie’s stars is no stranger to horror and the supernatural. Finn Wolfhard, who plays Finn, has previously appeared in the remake of It as well as Netflix hit Stranger Things.

3. There have been previous attempts by Spielberg to adapt the Henry James novel for the screen. It was originally developed as a movie called Haunted and was to be directed by Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. However, the Dreamworks studio pulled the plug about a month before filming. Spielberg is also behind this latest version, having hired Sigismondi through his Amblin Entertainment company.

4. The first adaptation of the novella was as an opera by British composer Benjamin Britten in 1954. It has also inspired a ballet and a number of stage plays. There have been several film adaptations, the first being the 1961 movie The Innocents while the TV series The Haunting of Bly Manor also takes its inspiration from The Turn of the Screw.
